Wishing for a Squirrel

April 1

I took Cali to my son’s house yesterday so he could spend the day with her very best friend, Kirby. Kirby is a Lab-Shepherd mix and he is about 4 years old. The two dogs were spending a lot of time watching the power line that stretches across my son’s back yard. Occasionally, a squirrel would cross the line into the yard next door. Of course, Kirby and Cali were determined they could jump the 15 feet necessary to reach the power line. The dogs wasted an inordinate amount of time waiting for an impossible opportunity to catch a furry squirrel that was always beyond their reach. I wonder how often we spend time wishing for the impossible. Do you find yourself wishing for a better job, a better house, that dream car or boat, a spouse that will fulfill all your childhood dreams? Hebrews 13:5 states, “Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you…’” (NAS). Next time you find yourself unhappy with your life and wishing for something better-take heed-you might be waiting for a squirrel.
