Kim, Cali, and I went to the hardware store yesterday to pick up some supplies. Kim stayed in the van with Cali as I went into the store. While I was gone, Cali decided she would climb into the drivers’ seat. I guess she felt grown up and was impatiently wanting to leave. When I got back to the van, there she was, sitting in my seat. I had to explain to Cali why she was unable to drive. I said-and I quote, “Cali, you can not drive this van for three reasons; 1) You are facing the wrong way; 2) your legs are not long enough to reach the pedals; and 3) I do not think you know how to manipulate the turn signals.” After giving my detailed explanation, she reluctantly returned the seat to me. When the disciples were in the Garden of Gethsemane before Jesus’ crucifixion, a crowd came to arrest Jesus. Peter, thinking he was protecting Jesus, took his sword and cut off the ear of the high priest’s slave. Jesus rebuked Peter and miraculously healed the ear. For a moment, Peter climbed into the driver’s seat. Peter did not realize that Jesus’ crucifixion was part of God’s eternal plan. Are there times when you try to climb into God’s driver’s seat? There will be times in our life when we do not understand God’s plan for us. It is then we often take control without trusting God for His direction. Next time you feel like taking control of a situation from God’s driver’s seat, try to relax, unbuckle the seat belt, and slide over. Let God take the wheel.
