May 23-Just Out Of Reach

Kim and I were trimming Kim’s mom’s tree the other day. In order to climb the tree, I had to launch a throw line so I could attach it to my climbing line. A throw line consists of a weighted throw bag tied to a thin cord. In order to get the weight over a branch I had to use a seven-foot slingshot pole with a sturdy rubber band. Launching a throw bag is an art form as it does not always go in the intended direction. The throw bag can hang up in a nearby branch making retrieval difficult. This launch, however, was a success. As the weight was coming down, Cali quickly saw an opportunity for play. She stretched with all her might to grab the small weighed sack. To make matters a bit more interesting, the throw bag was brightly colored and swaying back and forth. Cali knew for certain the toy was a keeper. When the sack reached mouth level, she grabbed it and pulled with all her strength. Fortunately, I was able to retrieve the sack in one piece and then did what any other dog owner would do. I began pulling on the other end of the cord to make the sack swing back and forth just out of Cali’s reach. She went crazy-jumping and leaping. I figured since Cali wanted to play, I would play too. Cali’s persistence paid off as the throw bag eventually reached her mouth. Jesus told a parable about a friend who asked for a favor in the middle of the night. Even though his neighbor would not honor the request out of friendship, he honored it due to the friend’s persistence. Jesus stated, “For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened” (NAS). God does not mind when we persistently ask for something. He looks at us, not only as a friend, but as His child. God will always give us what is best. Our asking will never go in vane even if God’s answer may not align with our request. God honors our persistence since our persistence demonstrates our faith in Him. Hebrews 11:6 states, “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him” (NAS). The fact we are asking God for a request demonstrates that we believe He exists and that he hears us when we pray. Persistence pleases God. Next time you feel like giving up on prayer stay the course. Even though the throw bag might sway just beyond reach, in time you will be able to grab it.
