Have you seen the commercial where the husband is lying on the couch with a bad cold? He mournfully says to his wife, “I can’t reach the remote.” The remote happens to be just out of arm’s reach. Cali is often like that. I will see her lying on her bed with a toy. The toy will usually fall out of her mouth and roll just beyond reach. She will stare at it with the most mournful face as if to say, “Master dear of mine, I can’t reach my beloved toy.” I know it is probably bad training, but I usually pick up the toy and give it to her.
Ezra was an old Testament priest and a teacher of the Law. He made his way from Babylon during Judah’s captivity and came to Israel. His intent was to teach the people God’s laws. Ezra says of himself in Ezra 7:10, “For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the Lord and to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel” (NAS). Ezra determined to do three things: study the law, practice it, and teach it. How often do you feel sad, disappointed, depressed, and anxious? Are you always asking someone for help when perhaps your Bible is sitting right beside you? Do you take time to read God’s word, practice it, and teach it to others? Next time you feel down and out, try reaching for God’s remote and turn it on.
