June 1-Watching and Waiting

I heard Cali barking up a storm this morning. I looked out the window and there she was, standing like a statue, looking up into the tree. I knew something had caught her eye, so I went outside to see what captivated her. Sure enough, a squirrel was in the tree.

Last week, I was playing with Cali and throwing her favorite toy-a rubber bone. As Cali ran back to me, she stopped mid-way and sniffed at something. It was a dead squirrel. Apparently, Cali had killed a squirrel and wanted to make sure it was still there. I scooped the squirrel up into my shovel and took it over to a dirt area. As I was digging a burial hole, Cali grabbed the squirrel and took off with it. I guess it was her trophy and she apparently did not want me to bury it in such an undignified way. I had little sympathy for Cali. I made her drop the squirrel and I proceeded to bury it. I think that experience made Cali want this squirrel in the tree more than ever.

Looking at Cali’s intensity makes me think of Jesus’ parable concerning the ten virgins. The virgins were waiting for a bridegroom’s arrival. Five were foolish and did not fill their lamps with oil. The other five were ready and prepared for the bridegroom’s coming. Matthew 25: 6-7 states, “But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him. Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps” (NAS). The story ends with the diligent virgins entering the wedding feast. The foolish virgins arrived to find the door shut.

I believe Jesus’ return is coming soon. Are we standing like Cali, looking up and waiting for His arrival? I pray you will prepare yourself for His coming. Preparation means asking Jesus to be your lord and savior and asking Him to forgive you of your sins. Let’s look up-do you see the squirrel?
