July 19-"Sit Cali, Sit"

This afternoon, I decided to play with Cali in the back yard since I had not given her much attention today. Her favorite game is the bone throw. I throw her rubber bone across the yard, she retrieves it, and brings it back. She performs much better with a treat after each throw. Well, today it seems she forgot how to play the game. She dropped the bone much too soon, ran up to me, and begged for her treat. We stared at each other for a while until I relented and got her bone (I know-I gave in). We tried it again, and the same thing happened.

I decided to play her next favorite game, the high-altitude bone throw. I tell her to sit, I throw the bone high into the air, and she traps it on the ground. She has the makings of a great soccer player. I got ready to throw the bone and told her to sit. She just stood there. I said, “Cali, sit.” Nothing happened. I stared at her and she stared up expecting her bone to fall from the sky. I’m thinking, “Did we just bring you home from the dog pound? Is this a new dog? Where’s Cali? What happened to all our months of training?” I gave up and went inside. I gave Cali a D- for today’s PE grade.

Do you ever forget God’s words of comfort when He asks you to trust Him? Do you ever let fear, doubt, and anxiety cause you to become immobile? Psalm 77:11 states, “I shall remember the deeds of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old” (NAS). Let us not forget God’s commands to obey and trust Him. Learning to obey and trust takes discipline. There will be days when we slip, like Cali, and forget all God’s training. The difference between God and us is-He will not give up and go inside.
