Dodging the Rainbirds

April 30

Cali loves to chase her rubber bone. Cali never tires of it and her enthusiasm never wains, unless, the rainbirds come on. My strong alpha dog is terrified of the rainbirds and she does not like getting wet. I usually stay outside to calm her down when they come on. I am trying to get Cali used to the rainbirds. I will throw her bone after mathematically calculating the exact moment two opposing rainbirds are the farthest apart. She will run quickly to retrieve it and then wait for my next calculation. Sometimes I mess up and throw her bone at the wrong time and she gets caught in a spray of cold water. It is moments like this she loses all faith in me. We try it again until Cali becomes more confident in my calculations. After a while, the rainbirds automatically turn off, everything becomes quiet, Cali calms down, and life goes on as though nothing ever happened. Jesus spoke to Martha stating, “…Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so manly things, but only one thing is necessary…” (NAS). Of course, the necessary thing was to sit at the feet of Jesus. It is easy to feel like Cali, trying to dodge life’s rainbirds. We get so distracted by schedules, appointments, and activities that we become exhausted and frustrated. Next time you find yourself dodging life’s challenges, stop, sit at Jesus’ feet, and ask Him to turn off the rainbirds.
