A Place of Refuge

April 27

Cali’s best friend, Kirby, was over yesterday. Kirby is my son’s dog. The two dogs get along very well, however, Cali appears to have a bit more energy than Kirby. When Kirby gets tired, Cali wants to keep playing. Since Cali is the alpha dog, Kirby tends to get tired of the bossiness and finds a place to hide and rest. One of Kirby’s favorite spots of escape is on top of Cali’s kennel. For whatever reason, Cali is not a jumper. She does not jump on top of her kennel and she prefers solid ground. When Kirby takes refuge on the kennel, Cali usually finds something to keep herself occupied. Psalm 91:14 states, “Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name” (NAS). When life gets you down and your energy is gone, trust God to set you securely on a high place. Think of riding an airplane at 30,000 feet. You look out the window and the topography of the land makes sense. Everything looks small. Whenever Kim and I fly home from Alaska, I enjoy looking out the window as we approach the airport. I enjoy looking down at the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains in Southern California. I have hiked in both ranges for many years. However, not until I fly over them does the layout of the land make sense. Sometimes God places us in high places so we can get a better look at our life. Often, we are not aware that we are in a high place nor are we aware that God placed us there. If you feel lonely, your routine has changed, or you are feeling sorry for yourself, it might be the time for you to reevaluate your situation and take inventory of your surroundings. During these times, try to visualize God placing you on top His kennel.
