A Bundt Cake

Updated: Apr 15, 2020

Daily Devotionals With Cali-April 10

Cali does not like staying inside. She is a total outside dog and cannot stand lying on my office futon nor does she like lying on the nice bed we bought for her in the living room. The only place she really likes is the kitchen where her nose goes into overdrive. Kim spent a good amount of time the other day making this wonderful Dutch, spice bunt cake. As it was cooling, we let Cali inside to socialize with the family. Realizing that Cali was way too quiet, Kim went into the kitchen to find a perfectly formed mouth-sized- bite of spice cake missing from the bunt. A few crumbs were lying on the floor with Cali standing as to say, “What’s the problem?” I could tell immediately by Kim’s reaction that something had gone terribly wrong. As I entered the kitchen and saw what had happened, I did what any other reasonable husband would do in such a situation-I laughed out loud. It was the funniest thing I had seen in a long time. Fortunately, my instincts kicked in and I immediately swallowed the humor. Kim was not smiling. I then did what any normal thinking husband would do-I left the kitchen as fast as possible. I’m not sure whether Kim was more upset with me or with Cali. After all, it wasn’t me that took the time and effort to make the bundt cake. Unfortunately, that realization didn’t hit until it was too late. Kim skillfully cut out the area where Cali had taken the bite and later graciously served me a piece. It was delicious! I was back in good graces. Does it seem like life has taken a bite out of you? Have you experienced a loss, an illness, or loneliness? Hebrews 13:5-6 states, “…I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,” so that we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?” If life has taken a bit out of you, know that God can clean up the edges and make you tasty again. It’s ok to be God’s Bundt cake.

Blessings,

Mervin
